Deck Railings

Railings

Railings are required on decks or raised patios that are 24″ above the ground, and down stairs consisting of more than three steps. Besides safety and security, we want railings to look great and last the life of your deck or raised patio. There are many styles and material options to choose from, some requiring more maintenance than others. Check out some of the types we install below!

Aluminum Railings

Aluminum railings are the most common type of rail installed today. Low maintenance, long lasting powder coated colours that easily match your house and deck, product warranties, and price all factor into this being the number one solution. Railings come standard in 42" heights to follow building codes, but can come in 36" for decks lower then 5' off the ground, and 60" heights for wind and privacy walls. Railings can be top mounted or fascia mounted, and different manufacturers have different top rail and post profiles. Common colours are white, black, bronze, and grey. Aluminum railings can have thinner pickets, wider pickets, clear glass, or tinted glass installed. These railings can even have low voltage lighting incorporated into the top rails to iluminate your deck space!

Wood Railings

Wood railings made from cedar or pressure treated lumber are still a great option to finish your new or existing wood deck. Even if you have a new composite deck, you can add stained wood railings to accent wood features on your house. Stained wood railings last much longer than stained deck boards as most of the railing surface is vertical where snow and rain do not cover and soak in. Wood railings are also less expensive than aluminum or composite railings. Wood railings can be mounted to the fascia of the deck or through the deck boards to the framing below. As long as regular maintenance is done, these railings will stay beautiful and strong for years to come!

Other Types of Railing

Railings can also consist of other materials such as composite, stainless steel cable, metal tubing, vinyl, or combinations of these materials along with wood and aluminum!
